The Montrose Rod and Gun Club was originally incorporated in 1953 by a group of local shooting enthusiasts. The facility consisted of an indoor range which was located near the location that "Best Signs" of Montrose now occupies today. The original facility was not much to behold and by many accounts one could "throw a cat" through numerous cracks within the building. At that point, all that was offered by the club was small bore rifle and light pistol shooting. Originally, club monies were generated by fees received from teaching hunters safety courses.
In 1979 the gun club traded the city of Montrose it's property and building for a piece of property across the street. The city of Montrose wanted the property held by MRGC, as it wished to annex that property into the city limits. Since it is unlawful to discharge a firearm within the city limits, the city brokered a trade to ensure the MRGC could stay within the county and therefore retain the indoor shooting facility.
The MRGC then constructed the current indoor facility between the years of 1979 and 1983. Although repairs have been made throughout the years, the indoor facility remains today much as it was in 1983.
The property for the outdoor range was acquired in 1976. By 1978, the outdoor range had one outdoor rifle range and one trap field. In years following, covered benches were built and berms were erected to separate the pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges. In 1984, club members added the skeet shooting facilities and the restroom facilities.
The MRGC is now fifty-one years old and on the brink of moving into the next millenium. Recently, Cowboy Action Shoots, 5 Stand Sporting Clays and Silhouette Shoots have become part of the landscape at the MRGC outdoor range. Our hope for the club is that it continues to grow and we have as much success and fun with it in the century to come!
